What is an Invasive plant?

Most invasive plants are alien species - plants like Japanese Knotweed that we've brought into our gardens back in the 19th century as an ornamental plant.

When they escape, they can take over; for e.g., plants like Knotweed are taking over river banks and smothering out all the little grasses and herbs and vegetation, and by getting rid of the plants, they're driving out the animals associated with them.

There are alien invasive plants all around the world. There is a pretty one from South Africa, a small oxalis, that has spread all over the Mediterranean and become quite a pest in agricultural systems the world over. You can see it represented, but controlled, at the Gardens in the Great Glasshouse.
